PCDcalc - FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

CONTENTS

1) How accurate are the distances calculated by PCDcalc?
The distance calculations themselves are technically accurate to one metre, but remember that each postcode covers a number of addresses, so is not quite accurate down to that level of precision (more like tens of metres). Also bear in mind the calculations rely on the postcode data co-ordinates being accurate and correct. The data is created and supplied by the Royal Mail and Ordnance Survey, so any inaccuracies in the data from these providers will be reflected in the final calculations.

2) What are the mimumum system requirements?
A PC running Microsoft Windows XP, Vista or 7, and an active connection to the internet. The later version of the application (PCDcalc2) requires that Microsoft .NET Version 4.0 framework or later is also installed on the computer. This can be downloaded for free from Microsoft's own web site. Please note that .NET is entirely independent from PCDcalc and many other software applications rely on .NET 4.0 (or an earlier version) being installed on your computer to work.

3) Is PCDcalc easy to install?
Yes. It couldn't be easier! Just download it, save it to your computer's hard drive and double-click it to run it. No installation is required. When you first run it you will need a RegID (sent to you when you first purchase the licence) - just copy that into the box and the computer is registered. Then you can start using PCDcalc straight away.

4) How are the distances displayed?
They can be displayed in miles or km, with a precision of up to 3 decimal places.

5) Can I use PCDcalc on any computer?
No, the licences are on a per machine basis. When you purchase PCDcalc, you choose how many computers you want it to run on. Once you have installed it on that number of PCs, it will not work on any others.

6) How can I add a new computer to our registered list?
To add another machine licence, just contact us. Once we have increased your machine licence quota you can download PCDcalc onto the new machine and start using it.

7) What if I want to replace a computer with another one?
The licences are purchased on a per machine basis, and essentially "live and die" with each machine. However, in exceptional circumstances, if you have no option but to replace one machine with another (e.g. after a critical hardware fault) we may, at our discretion, transfer your licence to the new machine. Please contact us in this instance.

8) How often is the database that PCDcalc uses updated?
Approximately, every three months.

9) Does PCDcalc cover ALL UK postcodes?
PCDcalc covers all postcodes in mainland UK (GB) but currently does not include Northern Ireland. Eire is also excluded (as this is not part of the UK).

10) What is the difference between my ClientID and my RegID?
A unique ClientID is issued to you when you first purchase a PCDcalc licence. This ID relates to you, the client, and remains associated with you indefinitely. A ClientID identifies you, and is required for you to download PCDcalc from our web site. A RegID also relates to a single client, but has an expiry time associated with it. A client can have one or more RegIDs. A RegID allows you to register one or more computers with the PCDcalc system after you have downloaded the PCDcalc application.
